Eco-design and digital sustainability
Commitment to low environmental impact, technical transparency, and open source.

1. Development and open source
The Circulab web platform was developed by Emanuel Saramago.
We believe in knowledge sharing and transparency: all source code of the platform is open source and available on GitHub under a community license.
2. Architecture and technologies
The technical stack was chosen with focus on sobriety, performance, and durability:
- Astro (SSR): Server-side rendering delivering lean, pre-computed HTML, eliminating unnecessary JavaScript sent to the browser.
- Vue 3: Used exclusively as dynamic islands strictly for components that require real-time user interaction.
- WebAwesome: Native web component library, reducing heavy dependencies and adhering to modern web standards.
- Leaflet & OpenStreetMap: Lightweight, fast mapping without heavy commercial mapping tracking.
- Supabase: Scalable and efficient database management.
3. Digital footprint and energy reduction
Digital sustainability is an essential part of our ecological mission:
- Data efficiency: Lower data transfer directly translates into less energy consumption across servers, network infrastructure, and user devices.
- Asset optimization: Prioritizing vector graphics (SVG) and modern WebP images with high compression.
- No invasive tracking: No advertising cookies or heavy third-party commercial analytics scripts.
- Dark mode by default: The dark palette helps save power on OLED/AMOLED displays.
